Abstract
The article seeks to reflect on what to do in the institutional and public policy fields to address the gender issue in the academic world. To this end, we compare the gender equality policies applied by higher education institutions around the world, and based on this, we develop a typology of such policies: those that seek to close gaps and combat gender stereotypes, those that seek to facilitate the reconciliation of work and private life, and those that focus on eliminating violence against women. In addition to considering the political feasibility and potential cost of implementing policies, we seek to emphasize the importance of efforts to move from policy approval to the cultural changes required to make gender equality a reality in academia.
