Awareness-raising

The current inequalities in our society towards women have led to various initiatives, projects, programs and legislation aimed at eradicating these gaps and ensuring that women live lives free from violence. Therefore, from the normative framework at the international level to the most local and even organizational instances, generating actions to promote equality is substantial, as mentioned in UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls” (UNWOMEN 2015). In order to contribute to Peruvian national goals, the UNESCO Chair on Gender Equality in Higher Education Institutions at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru has been working since 2016 with the aim of promoting more democratic universities that eradicate the current situations of inequality towards women and that promote actions so that women can develop their capacities in a free and complete manner, in safe spaces and without violence. To this end, part of the actions that we carry out are focused on raising awareness and training the university communities in Peru, in order to identify the needs that they have to face the different problems related to the inequalities between men and women.

The awareness and training of the university community (authorities, teachers, students, administrative staff) is carried out through workshops of different lengths, based on a participatory methodology that combines theory with cases, recreational activities and multimedia tools that seek reflection and learning, adjusted to the needs of the educational institution.

Since the creation of the UNESCO-PUCP Chair in 2016, we have held a series of conferences that have sought to promote gender equality, women’s participation in science and engineering careers, women’s leadership, the insertion of gender issues in public and private agendas, the development of gender policies, the elimination of gender-based violence, among others. Among our activities, the following stand out:

The gender gaps in careers linked to science, technology and innovation are evident in the academic and professional careers of male and female teachers. If we look at the data, in teaching, women represent only 19% of university teachers who do research in engineering and technology, and 17% of full members of the National Academy of Science (INEI, 2010; ANC, 2016; Gibney, 2016). At PUCP, during 2019, only 10% of the total senior professors in the Department of Engineering were women and only 24% of the total students in the Faculty of Science and Engineering were women. Faced with this situation, the UNESCO Chair on Gender Equality at PUCP has been developing various strategies to raise awareness and promote careers in science, technology and innovation among girls, adolescents, university students and teachers. Our goal is to get more girls and women involved in this area of knowledge and research. Among our activities, the following stand out:
