About the UNESCO Chairs

The UNESCO Chairs are an international program established in 1992 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The goals of the UNESCO Chairs are to promote the development of research, training and higher education programs through networking and knowledge sharing, as well as the promotion of inter-university cooperation.

The program currently comprises 700 UNESCO Chairs in 116 countries, including 25 UNESCO Chairs in gender equality worldwide and 170 university chairs promoting scientific research. UNESCO, whose representation in our country was established in 1995, works together with the Peruvian State providing technical assistance to various sectors, with the aim of contributing to the achievement of its objectives.

The UNESCO Chair for Gender Equality in Higher Education Institutions at PUCP was created in 2016, under the leadership of Professor Patricia Ruiz Bravo, as a recognition of excellence and institutional leadership in gender issues in the country. The UNESCO Chairs Program promotes that higher education institutions join efforts to achieve the 2015-2030 UNESCO Sustainable Development Goals.

Goals of the UNESCO Chairs:

  1. To strengthen the social sensitivity of higher education institutions towards the social sphere.
  2. To disseminate knowledge and awareness of sustainable development at all levels of society, with particular emphasis on the information needs of decision-makers.
  3. To develop appropriate and politically relevant indicators for the evaluation of the sustainability of development.
  4. Enhance institutional capacity to create sustainable development policies by training policy makers as well as institutional actors.
  5. Foster civil society participation in decision-making processes through advocacy training and awareness raising.
  6. Facilitate dialogue between different social stakeholders.
