Policies for the Respect of Gender Identity
The Policy for the Respect of Gender Identity at PUCP emerges as an initiative of the student movement Trans Reform between the years 2015 and 2016. The proposal presented to the University Council was approved at the meeting of the University Council on 31 May 2017. It resolves that, in accordance with respect for the dignity of the human person, the PUCP reaffirms its commitment to the defense and protection of gender identity, and therefore agrees on a policy that emphasizes its actions in the following sections:
- Awareness raising of the university community, including the student body, faculty, administrative staff and outsourcing personnel.
- Access and adequacy of services, from toilets and dressing rooms to awareness of sports and health staff.
- Response, within the disciplinary regulations, to situations of discrimination between students, teachers and non-teaching staff working at the PUCP.
- Promotion of curricular training that includes an adequate focus on sexual diversity.
The Trans PUCP Reform emerges as an initiative of the Group for Sexual Diversity at the University between the years 2014-2015.
The main objective of Trans Reform was to watch over the rights of trans people, protect them from any situation of discrimination as a result of their gender identity, and carry out research to implement a university policy that promotes respect for gender identity.
Based on research, the lack of identity representation on the identification card (IT) was detected as a central axis of discrimination of the trans student body.
The identification card (TI) assigned to trans students when they entered university corresponded to the legal name on the National Identity Document (DNI), which is maintained with the name given at birth.
As a result, the proposal for the acceptance and implementation of the Policy for the Respect of Gender Identity at the PUCP emerged. This was approved at the University Council session on May 31, 2017.
- It was agreed to create the Norms for the Inclusion of the Social Name in order to achieve a correct identification of trans people in the university community. These regulations were approved by the University Council on January 31, 2018. The university is committed to selecting specialized personnel to give procedural attention to changes in the identity of trans people’s ID, for those who wish to do so.
