The article “Women’s Leadership in Peruvian Universities” is part of the book The Time for Feminist Leadership Wellbeing and Culture of Peace at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The book consists of 37 articles in Spanish and English written by researchers from different countries and regions (Kenya, Spain, India and Latin America). The articles provide substantive and current information to understand and analyze with different approaches a diversity of experiences and conceptual developments on women and/or leadership. The book is organized in four sections: Building Networks, Conceptual Frameworks, Education and Policy. Feminist Leadership Time invites us to reflect on the crucial challenges to promote women’s participation in the creation and use of transformative leadership styles that contribute to inclusive, just and sustainable development.
Abstract
Despite significant changes in the international environment and, in particular, in the increasing access of women to higher education, studies show that the presence of women in government and leadership positions is still incipient. There is even less evidence regarding the affiliation and feminist approach of these women in spaces of power. In this article, based on a study of women’s employment trajectories in public institutions of higher education in Peru (Ruiz-Bravo, et al., 2017), we will look at the barriers that make it difficult for women teachers to occupy management and government positions, such as gender stereotypes, the reconciliation of work and family life, and gender violence. Finally, we will end this article by asking questions about the possibilities of feminist leadership.
